TRAUMA SYMPTOMS: VICTIMS OF ARMED CONFLICT AND TSUNAMI IN ACEH

Abstract

Aceh was in a prolonged armed conflict of the region’s history and was destroyed by a huge earthquake and tsunami which has made the Acehnese, especially teenagers, suffered from trauma in a simple rate with significant differences in each region, source of trauma and gender. These requires professional guidance especially in areas where the post hoc result are different such as in Bireun, South Aceh and Abdya, so that teenagers suffering from the trauma may live peacefully and they are able to plan a better life in the future through counseling service. This study applies the Manual Standard Trauma Symptom Inventory (TSI) that has been translated into the local language. This manual was divided into 2 scales; Validity scale with Atypical Response, Response Level, Inconsistent Response indicators. Clinical scale which was divided into four dimensions; Dysphoric Mood consisted of three indicators: Anxious Arousal, Depression and Anger Irritability; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD consisted of three indicators : Intrusive Experience, Defensive Avoidance and Dissociation; Sexual Dysfunction consisted of 2 indicators: Sexual Concerns and Dysfunction Sexual Behavior; and Self Dysfunction consisted of two indicators; Impaired Reference and Tension Reduction Behavior. The teenagers, who responded to indicators resulting in high scores, are classified as those in trauma who need serious guidance to avoid PTSD. This trauma is so dangerous since it can disturb the physical and mental health, a consequence of mental sickness if not treated for a long time.
