THE LANGUAGE OF REAL LIFE: BATU PAHAT, 1900-1941

Focussing on the district of Batu Pahat, in the state of Johor, the author of this article has argued that the expansion twentieth century capitalism had the effect of eventually interwovening the "language of real life" with "material activity" and "material intercourse".
