Abstract

The aim of this research article is to compare kalamar and uzhavar; the two groups of people as illustrated in the anthologies. It's needed to identify the similarities and contrasts between these two social communities which lived in early Tamilnadu. The anthologies furnish the primary data for this comparative study. The commentators’ commentaries, researchers’ opinions,   publishers’ ideas and epigraphists’ reports serve the secondary data. Cultivation of millets was the traditional occupation of uzhavar; the thinaimaanthar who served as employees in the paddy fields. Kalamar were the specific sect of people who were employed in the paddy fields caring for the cows. Kalavar is a transformed word of kalamar. Pulli and Thennan were leaders of kalavar.
