Abstract

This article aims to discuss the development of Chinese Maternity Hospital KualaLumpur from 1913 to 1941. The establishment of this institution aims to help the poor and needy people amongst the Chinese to seek health treatment. Nevertheless, to administer a welfare-type of institution is not an easy task especially in terms of inadequate funding from the British. This raises a question on how this institution being managed and funded during the British administration in Selangor. Thus, an analysis is conducted on management and financial aspects of the institution. The study is using qualitative method and the main sources for this  study are the Annual Reports of the Selangor Chinese Protectorate  and the Annual Reports of the Chinese Maternity Association (Incorporated) Kuala Lumpur from the Selangor Secretariat files. The findings of this article proves that this institution has been managed satisfactorily. This could be seen from the appointment of administrative committees, medical staffs as well as documentation matters. Interestingly, this article also finds that the life values of the Chinese that prioritise social responsibilities has become the main element to ensure this institution always committed in giving proper health services since its establishment until the Second World War.
